Kids and a Compromised Nervous System
In the wild every species abides by the natural law of advancing and defending the next generation. No one bats an eyelash at the aggressive behavior of a mother bear, lion, or tiger to protect their cubs. Even female hyenas form a protective circle around their cubs as they feed to keep the hungry males at bay until the little ones have had their fill. Where is that tenacity to protect the next generation of humans? Who will stand up to protect our young, their future, and keep them safe from falling of the cliff we built?
I have met a small, yet mighty group of Generation X’s and Millennial’s who have heard the calling and are willing to take action by standing up for our young. I have found these heroes through the Baseline Health Assessment. As I was explaining the Baseline Health Assessment to a young mother of four I witnessed her perk up, lean in, and furrow her brow as I explained how the layers of emotional, chemical, and physical trauma accumulate in the body compromising the nervous system from an early age. She jumped out of her chair grabbed my arm and said, “You’re talking about my youngest!” I had never met her baby girl, Sara, but saw the worry in the mom’s face as she explained how “different” her little girl was. I learned that the mom spent hours coming up with creative ways to keep Sara’s hair out her face and mouth because of the nervous habit Sara had of chewing her hair and flat out refusal to wear clips or headbands because she said they were uncomfortable. The mom told me about the effort it took cutting out all the tags from Sara’s pants and shirts, as well as, the never-ending battle to keep Sara’s glasses on her face. There was worry and confusion in the Mom’s voice when she said, “I watched her change from a content baby to an inconsolable, easily agitated toddler.” The heart break and frustration flashed across the mom’s face when she told me about the countless melt downs 6-year-old Sara had. This led to constant change and cancelled plans for the rest of the family. Listening to Sara’s mom say, “We are all walking on egg shells because it’s like we live with a fire breathing dragon” made me realize I have found someone willing to do whatever it takes to help her cub.
Sara’s mother was explaining the subtle (and not so subtle) signs of a compromised nervous system in a child. Long before pain comes into play changes in personality, behavior, emotions, learning, sleep, sensory integration, and immunity appear. These changes may look like colic, eczema, or difficulty nursing in a baby. The signs will progress into prolonged or chronic infections, irritably, moods swings, or compulsive behaviors in school aged children. Teens may show signs of self-harm, anxiety, apathy, or aggression. More kids than ever are suffering. The rate of pediatric health issues and the entangled tragedies are sky rocketing. Unlike most Chiropractors my main focus is on children and their developing nervous system. I believe every child has the birth right to healthy and develop into a vibrant, compassionate adult. My mission in life is to help kids like Sara and her family regain their health and quality of life. It is essential that I inform and educate as many parents as possible about the early signs of nerve system dysfunction and the devastating effects it has on a child’s development. As part of my community outreach, I would like to offer each and every family the opportunity for a Baseline Health Assessment for their children at no cost. The Baseline Health Assessment consists of a non-invasive nervous system exam and an evaluation of the child’s behavior. I am looking for other heroes to stand up and protect our young. Is this you?
